Post txt vs GUI web reviews

So with chase off development the status of orchid web browser is unknown and i have been playing around with dos based web browsers.

Arachne, Doslynx, Htget/wget, a few others and i even have OWB Orygin web Browser running under dos in full colour and even lets me log into hotmail.

Im actually using OWB right now to write this lil blog.

Arachne is great but it is also very needy and memory intensive.

Doslynx is very fast and allows you to download files and send emails but is text based only

Orygin is good, Full Colour, pictures, Java etc.. runs fairly well but is very slow at loading. seems to be an early stage alpha build but seems to run along side of doscore/aura just fine.

Orchid

the first version (so to speak) uses the "run" app in aura to run wget/htget via batch file but automatically adds the http://www.google.com to the script (or which ever address you input in orchid)
and downloads the html file and uses a HTML>TXT converter to make it readable. this is a very limited and primitive way to get files and create a web browser but this was just a test

the 2nd version actually uses the WATTCP socket and retrieves the files as a web browser actually would but did not convert in to TXT only came down in code. which we were just going to release it as this but was to shitty..

the next version was supposed to download & convert html to readable txt but i think chase has givn up for the time being.

so in the mean time i may just ship Orygin Web Browser + Doslynx with the primary distribution...

any thoughts? or any programmers want to have a crack at chases efforts?

I definitely favor Arachne. According to Wikipeda (Nov. 2011), "Arachne is currently the most advanced graphical web browser available for DOS". The latest version, v1.95, was released in 2008, so it must be fairly current. As for the fact that it is resource hungry, well, I guess that the user can have more than one browser as options; this way, he or she can choose what better suits particular needs.

Hello, JFK!

It could be you are right, JFK, and that is good news! However, at the time of my last post, Dillo for DOS was being released, and it wasn't even mentioned on Wikipedia, so it is a new development. One way or another, I hope that you include Dillo (or whatever works) on the next release. As a matter of fact, as I said before, I think that including more than one browser would not be a bad idea, so I am of the notion that Arachne shouldn't be disregarded, even if it is inferior. Incidentally, when is the next release of Aura?

to keep the distro light there will only be Aura based apps. there will be the app kind of store thingy to download external dos apps.
