Post My first post, with some coments and questions
on: January 18, 2012, 18:53

Hey there!
Well, i wanted to introduce myself, I am a user from Portugal, and I am very interested in free OS.
I came here because I was looking at some FreeDos videos on youtube, and noticed Doscore there, decided to know more about the project and... well, here i am ;D

I would like to say that I was a little confused by the website, I cant really tell if FreeDos is or not the base for your OS Doscore and Aura. Are Doscore and Aura the same with different Gui??

Anyway, I really like what I have seen so far :D
I thinks its a wonderfull piece of work and it really gets a lot of courage and hard work to do what you are doing.

Now, I was looking at freedos for a reason, and maybe this is a better solution:

I have an old laptop that I want to get running... well, not really running, its just an hobby of my own inner geek, lol, BUT, i am really trying to get the computer able to do some things. Not that it will be my first machine, but I want to work on it a little.
The computer is a:
Pentium1, 133mhz NONmmx.
64mbs RAM (EDO RAM i believe...)
2mbs graphic.
CDROM (2x speed i believe).
1 usb port (1.0 or 1.1, not sure)
2 PCMCIA slots (i have 2 PCMCIA cards, one has two usb ports that are 2.0, and the other one is a wireless card, 54mbps)
1 infrared port (never used it, lol)
Also, has some other ports, like for a printer and stuff like that... not really gonna use that.

My target was to install Widnows 98SE and use it all to:

-surf web (read a few jokes, visit wikipedia, visti some fotoblogs, stuff like that... nothing major. At the most, maybe check my email, but maybe I will not do that for lack of security).
-use IM (talk to some friends that are away using MSN protocol).
-listen to music (mp3, wma, AUDIO CD)
-read PDFs.
-read and edit text files (DOC, TXT, RTF, DOCX, etc)
-maybe use it to watch a movie in MPEG1 (i did it in the past, trasnformers looked good converted to mpeg1 loool)

So, nothing major... but still a really general use for a PC ;)

So, I was going with Win98... But i want to try free os instead. I already tried Damn Small Linux and didnt like it (although I will not give up my Ubuntu on the main laptop =P). Tried ReactOS and it always crahsed on boot, I gave up on it...

I got to think... the computer is really a low spec one... If i want to use it, I have to go with lighter software. So, for music I decided to try a DOS mp3 player, and got the idea "why not use a graphical version of DOS? Maybe I can use two applicaltions at the same time that way, and i can listen to music while reading PDF and DOC files, for example...".
Of course, I would have to ditch the internet idea, as DOS never supported wireless internet... But it would still be a nice experiment.

So, with this in mind, I came here hoping to use your FreeDos version... although, I have no idea if you are even using FreeDos =P lol.
I read your announcement on Aura M3... and it looked a lot like something I could use for this recreational/educational/geek fun, kind of computer... It aparently supports USB, and has most of my hardware covered... However, it seems that Aura needs MSDOS to run :( is that correct??
Also, I could only find AuraM2 for download... Where can I download Aura M3 iso, so that i can install it into the hd of the laptop? its a 1.4giga HD, it will be enough I suppose...

So... to make my question simpler:
Can I install Aura (or Doscore, whatever... I think they are the same and I am just confusing as being two diferent OS) in my laptop, and use it to test what my PC can do, and at the same time be a regular user for you, like a "beta user", a "test user"??
Please, give me some clarification, and also the downloads links needed. I thank you for your time :)

P.S.: I registered TommyLeePark first, but write the email wrong... can you please change it and make me with that user name please?

P.P.S.: Sorry for my bad english :(

Hello,
First off I would like to say welcome to the Free OS community, and thanks for your intrest in Aura.
I know at the moment, Our websites are a bit confusing. In the past Aura and doscore were 2 seperate systems but we are merging and becoming just Aura.

I have not personaly tested Aura on a system with those specs, however I believe Aura should be able to run fine. Aura only requres about 100mb of HD space. Please DO post letting us know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Aura Milestone 3 has not yet been released however it is expected to launch within a few weeks. Milestone 2 (1290) is the latest public release and can be obtained from:
http://finncomputers.com/aura/download.

As for your username, I have deleted TommyLeePark. If you wish to use that username please register it as a new user and I will transfer your posts from TommyLPark to TommyLeePark.

Your support is highly appreciated. Thank you for your interest and your will to be a tester.

Best regards,
Chase Finn

Hey Chase!
Thanks for the quick reply!

I have been doing some reading and according to what I read, plus your reply, I understand that Doscore was a distribution of FreeDOS that that was later made to use the AURA graphical interface, correct?

I also understand that Aura3 has not been released yet, but it will be a Doscore updated version, which will run in an updated Aura, correct? So, is Doscore better than FreeDOS, in terms of drivers and all of that? Because Apparently M3 will have native support for USB, and will have a good work done in terms of using internet. So, it seems that FreeDOS is not the best option for what I want.

Another question, Doscore... it only works with Aura, correct? Or can i use it with lets say... opengem? Or another GUI? I am just saying that maybe Aura will be too much for my system, but I will give it a try anyway. I will wait for M3, since there is really no point on burning a CD for a OS that will be updated soon.

From what I said on my first post, do you think Aura and Doscore will be up to the task? I mean, can Aura (or Doscore alone, for that matter) run two or more applications at the same time?
I have my goal settled as:
1. having a browser surfing the web, with a music playing and a text editor opened. (so, a browser opening wikipedia, with me copying wikipedia text to a text file, while I hear a christmas song in MP3, for example). 3 apps running at the same time.
2. Watch videos (having the file in my HD, I was able to watch MPEG1 and WMV2 videos without problems. Like I said, I watched Transformers in that old PC converted in MPEG1.) Of course, I won't be running anything else with the video, so all CPU power and RAM memory will be used to get the best AV experience.

Also, in regards of system requirements, how would you put MSDOS, FREEDOS, DOSCORE, Windows95 and Windows98??

Sorry for so many questions, but I want to undersdtand it as much as possible before I actually mess around with it. I now have Win98SE in the laptop, and will use it until M3 comes out. When M3 comes out, I will try it and give you all feedback I can. I will also let you know how other applications run in Aura (i have found some interesting DOS applications on the web...)

Thanks, and I hope we can help each other a lot.

P.S.: I will keep TommyLPark. No need to have work because of that :)

Just a quick sugestion, I understand that AuraM3 will be able to play mp3 files, is that correct? I have found an interesting DOS player, that appears to be small (havent tested it yet, so I cant really say a lot about the performance) and is compatible with LOTS of formats (mp3, aac, ogg, wma, etc). Its called Mpxplay, and its located here: http://mpxplay.sourceforge.net/
Since its a DOS based player, it should run on Doscore, right? Would it be a nice add to Aura M3? It would improve audio compatibility a lot... And you could still keep your own mp3 player, the other one could be only for other formats :)
Look into it, might be an interesting feature.
Also, what file formats are supported in Aura?
Txt probably is, but is there are support for DOC, PDF, RTF, etc??
I can try looking for a program that could be added to the instalation (even if as a optional thing ony) that would be able to open these formats, if you want :)

mpxplayer also supports native AC97 and soundblaster. FreeDOS does have support for Soundblaster cards and AC97 but the support is limited. until freedos 2.0 comes out there will be limited soundcard support im affraid.

Doscore is the name of the Distro

Aura is the name of the GUI.

Soon they will be merged to become a freedos based OS called Aura OS.

doscore will be the customised freedos distro and aura will be the front end.
